Course Content Details – 2 Day Course for horse owners (Oakbank SA)

This is a hands on course.

All participants will trim one horse each day, and apply shoes if they choose.
Course is tailored to suit individual participants, regardless of experience or lack of it! All participants work at their own level and speed.

DAY 1

8.30-10am

• Safety
• Working conditions
• Anatomy of the hoof
• Discussion and gait analysis of course horses
• Controlling your workspace
• Horsemanship
• How and where to stand

10am-12.30

• How to trim the hoof to achieve correct balance

12.30-1pm

• Lunch + DVDs

1-4.30pm

• Continue trimming
• How to select shoes and nails
• How to apply shoes if required

4.30-5.30pm

• Discussion and questions

6.30-8pm

• Course dinner & discussion

8-9pm

• Slides, DVDs & discussion

DAY 2

8.30-9.30am

• Recap of Day 1
• Discussion and gait analysis of course horses
• Lameness problems discussion

9.30-12.30am

• Trimming extreme hoof problems
• Preventative maintenance

12.30-1pm

• Lunch & discussion

1-4pm

• Further trimming / shoeing
• Altering machine made shoes
• Hoof reconstruction
