Early Hoof Care for Foals

The question is often asked, when should hoof care for foals commence?

In my opinion as a farrier, it needs to begin as early as possible, from around 10 days old. There will not be much to do but you should be checking to make sure those tiny hooves are starting their life in the right direction and are already level.

The safest place to begin approaching the little foal is in a soft well padded stable with mother held at halter and standing quietly.

From the very first trim be sure to use the breeching rope system for controlling the young foal. It only takes a few seconds to set one up to fit, and the enormous benefits are that you now have quiet control.

Never try to restrain a young foal with only a halter as they do not understand head restraint at this age and they will always try to run backwards and flip over as a result.

If there are any indications of crooked legs or there is the slightest doubt about incorrect conformation, you will need to check the foal’s hooves at least every two weeks until the problem is resolved.

It is appropriate to work with both the vet and farrier and follow their advice if the foal has abnormal tendencies.
